Both tours offer you a well-balanced mix of history, culture, everyday life and personal insider tips. The longer tour also leads into other historic quarters and leaves even more time for background, questions and small discoveries. It normally includes a break in a café too.
More than a classic city tour
Our tour is not a string of dates or sights. We want to show you Porto the way we experience the city ourselves. Besides the best-known landmarks, you learn how people in Porto live, which traditions shape the city and why Porto has changed so much in recent years. We talk about history and architecture as well as current topics, the Portuguese way of life and the everyday life of the locals. Of course, along the way you also get lots of personal recommendations for restaurants, cafés, bars, port wine, viewpoints and other places that will enrich your stay.
Part 1: The heart of Porto
Our tour starts in the centre of Porto, either at Praça de Carlos Alberto (tour of 2 hours 15 minutes) or at the Almeida Garrett monument on the Avenida dos Aliados (3.5-hour tour), the grand boulevard of Porto.
From there we explore the upper town with its historic buildings and charming lanes. Along the way we visit, among other places:
- Praça da Liberdade and Avenida dos Aliados (3.5-hour tour only)
- Praça de Lisboa
- Livraria Lello (from outside)
- the University of Porto, Fonte dos Leões
- Igreja do Carmo, Torre dos Clérigos (from outside)
- Miradouro da Vitória or Miradouro das Virtudes, with one of the most beautiful views over Porto
As well as fascinating stories, you get plenty of tips for restaurants, cafés and bars where the locals like to go too.
Part 2: Down to the Douro
Then we leave the big squares and follow small streets and stairways towards the Douro. On the way we discover quiet corners that many visitors hardly ever find on their own. Past the Palácio da Bolsa and the Mercado Ferreira Borges, we finally reach the famous Ribeira. Here we enjoy the view of the river, the historic port wine cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia and the impressive bridges that connect Porto with Gaia. Along the way we tell stories about trade, port wine, the development of the city and life on the Douro. A look behind the scenes in the oldest quarter of Porto, where most tourists never stray, is also worthwhile.
This is where both tours normally end, but that depends on the guide and the wishes of the guests.
Optional part 3: The original Porto (3.5-hour tour only)
The longer tour can instead also lead into the historic quarter below the cathedral. This original residential quarter is one of the most authentic places in the city and shows Porto from a side that many visitors never get to know. Between narrow lanes, small houses and hidden squares, you learn more about medieval Porto, the development of the old town and the life of its residents in the past and today. The finale is the imposing cathedral (Sé) with one of the most beautiful panoramic views over Porto and the Douro.
Personal, flexible and with plenty of time for questions
Every tour is a little different. Our guides make the tour lively and are happy to respond to the interests of the group. Whether history, architecture, food and drink, port wine, tips for going out or life in Portugal: questions are welcome at any time. The small group size in particular creates a pleasant atmosphere with enough time for conversations, photos and individual recommendations.
Small groups, big experience
Unlike many classic city tours, we attach great importance to a personal atmosphere. That is why our public tours have a maximum of 12 participants.
That means: no crowds, no huge tour groups, enough time for questions, personal contact with the guide and relaxed walks through the old town.
This way the city tour becomes a shared experience and not a lecture in front of a large group.
